I built an algae photobioreactor to breed algae in large amounts. Once the algae are harvested, I will extract the lipds and use transesterification create biodiesel fuel.
This was a biotechnology research project that I did my sophomore year, when I was 15 years old, for my AP Biology class. I replicated professional research techniques in my garage in order to classify individuals based on the presence or absence of a dimorphic human transposon, Alu.
Because Alu insertions are random, individuals' genotypes for Alu insertions will vary, and therefore the presence of an Alu insertion at the 342nd base of the 8th intron of the PLAT gene (human tissue plasminogen activator) on the short arm of chromosome 8 will vary and this variation can be detected with PCR and electrophoresis.
